Erin McCarthy

This piece is me helping a third grade student draw in an art class I teach. I thought this part of my day was emotional and distinctly me.

A drawing within a drawing! My first thought on observing this was that it must take a LOT of patience and self-forgiveness to sketch a childlike drawing and be satisfied with it- strangely, the funky frog and uneven crayon marks make this piece shockingly realistic. I love how you chose to highlight the drawings instead of, say, the hands or the desk because it makes this picture really come alive. The only thing that bothers me is how dark the three fingers are on the larger hand- a little bit of artistic license could be taken to make them less dark and more textured. This is amazing and I really hope you show this to your third graders!

I like how the coloring is not finished, it's unexpected. It really looks like a child is coloring. Nice job!

this is such a great idea! the hands are remarkably well drawn. the child's hand is distinct from the larger one. the three fingers cupping around the smaller hand seem a bit too large though, or maybe they just need more detail. aside from that i love it :)

the idea you have here is adorable and so creative. i really like the hands because those are difficult to draw but when i first saw the piece it just looked a little unfinished. although that is what the drawing is about so you can get away with it!
